American Holiday Thanksgiving Icon - Thanksgiving Turkey Colouring Pictures
The 24th of November 2011 is Thanksgiving holiday in the United States and any where that Americans live, work and play around the world. The most noticeable icon of the Thanksgiving holiday is a very special bird called the Turkey.
The American wild turkey was a vital resource for the first while settlers to the "new world". In some years when the harvest was not so good it was the availability of wild turkey for hunting that kept the pilgrims alive. So important was the wild turkey, when the American colonies gained their independence from England, senior statesman Benjamin Franklin nominated the wild turkey to be the national bird.
The harvest feast we recognize as the first Thanksgiving feast was actually a harvest feast to which native American Indians brought most of the food. Never the less the feast was to give thanks to God for the bountiful harvest, compared to previous harvests. Relations between the Pilgrims and Indians in later years were not so good but at the time of the first Thanksgiving feast they worked together well and appreciated each other.
The Turkey American's eat at the time of Thanksgiving these days is a descendant of the wild turkey. They don't really look so much alike anymore. Over the years the commercial turkey has been bread for large meaty legs and full breasts, which is where the white meat is located.
